Most people have experienced sinus pressure or congestion at some point, but when it lingers or returns  often, it may be more than just a cold. Sinusitis, or inflammation of the sinuses, can lead to persistent discomfort and significantly impact your quality of life. At Greenwich ENT, we help patients identify the root causes of sinus problems and find lasting relief.

What Causes Sinusitis?

Sinusitis occurs when the tissue lining the sinuses becomes inflamed or infected. This can cause the sinuses to swell, trapping mucus and making it difficult to breathe through the nose.

There are several potential triggers, including:

  • Viral infections like the common cold
  • Bacterial infections that develop after a cold or allergy flare-up
  • Nasal polyps or growths that block sinus drainage
  • Deviated septum, which can obstruct airflow and drainage
  • Environmental irritants like smoke or pollution
  • Fungal infections in rare cases

Sinusitis can be acute lasting less than four weeks, or chronic, lasting more than 12 weeks. Chronic sinusitis may develop if the underlying cause isn’t addressed or if structural issues are present.

Recognizing the Symptoms

Sinusitis symptoms can mimic a cold, which is why it’s often misdiagnosed or untreated. However, there are some key signs that indicate you’re dealing with sinus inflammation rather than a simple virus.

These include:

  • Facial pain or pressure, especially around the cheeks, eyes, or forehead
  • Nasal congestion and difficulty breathing through the nose
  • Thick yellow or green nasal discharge
  • A headache that worsens when bending over
Reduced or lost sense of smell and taste
  • Fatigue or general discomfort
  • Post-nasal drip or persistent cough
Bad breath or sore throat from drainage

If your symptoms persist for more than 10 days or keep returning, it’s time to consult an ENT specialist for a proper evaluation.

How Greenwich ENT Can Help

At Greenwich ENT, we use advanced diagnostic tools to pinpoint the exact cause of your sinus issues. A physical exam, nasal endoscopy, or imaging studies like a CT scan may be recommended to assess sinus inflammation, blockages, or anatomical abnormalities.

Depending on the cause and severity, your treatment plan may include:

  • Medications: Decongestants, nasal corticosteroid sprays, antihistamines, or antibiotics for bacterial infections
  • Saline rinses: To help flush out mucus and irritants
  • Lifestyle and environmental adjustments: Reducing exposure to allergens or irritants
  • In-office procedures: Such as Balloon Sinus Dilation, a minimally invasive option that opens blocked sinuses and promotes natural drainage without surgery
  • Surgery: In more severe or chronic cases, sinus surgery may be recommended to correct structural issues or remove obstructions like polyps

Our goal is always to help you breathe more comfortably, reduce recurrence, and minimize the need for long-term medication. Contact us today for more information.
