Labyrinthitis

Most commonly, labyrinthitis is caused by a viral infection, though it can also be the result of a bacterial infection. Frequent causes of labyrinthitis include:

• Upper respiratory infections
• Epstein-Barr virus
• Herpes simplex
• Stomach flu

Along with performing a physical exam, your doctor will ask you about the extent and duration of your symptoms. In addition to labyrinthitis, your symptoms could be the result of another condition like vestibular neuritis or BPPV, so determining their actual cause is an important first step.

Diagnostics will focus on your hearing, balance and nervous system. Procedures may include an electrocardiogram (EKG), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and vestibular testing.

Medications used to treat labyrinthitis include antivirals, antibiotics, corticosteroids and drugs to manage nausea or dizziness. If your symptoms persist after several weeks of taking medication, your ENT may recommend physical therapy to help manage dizziness.

There are also several steps you can take at home to help manage your labyrinthitis symptoms, including:

• Holding a warm washcloth over your ear
• Gargling with warm salt water
• Reducing your alcohol intake
• Avoiding sudden movement and exposure to bright lights during a flare-up

Less commonly, surgery may be necessary for labyrinthitis. If surgery is the best option, your doctor will explain every step of the process so you understand what to expect and feel confident about what’s to come.
