Your ENT will help you understand how these treatments work. Because of their anti-inflammatory properties, doctors believe steroids may reduce disease activity within the inner ear.

Steroid treatment is often prescribed for patients with inner ear disorders, but steroids taken by mouth or injected into a vein may not always be the best fit. High doses may be necessary to treat the inner ear, potentially leading to side effects.

Intratympanic steroid injections can provide effective symptom control with limited side effects.

These treatments can improve the quality of life for patients with Ménière’s disease and sudden sensorineural hearing loss. They can also help with vertigo, balance and emotional effects.

Your ENT will explain each step of the treatment process and answer any questions you may have.

Your doctor will place a medicated cream in your ear canal to numb the treatment area. Once the numbing has taken effect, a small needle is placed into your eardrum. The medication is injected into the middle ear, where it sits before being absorbed by the inner ear. You may need to remain in a flat position for up to half an hour to receive the maximum effects from the medication. After the procedure, you may feel slightly disoriented, and we recommend bringing a companion to drive you home.

You may need to receive multiple injection treatments. Your doctor will discuss your treatment plan with you beforehand, including how many injections you may need.
