Eustachian Tube Dysfunction

There are three categories of Eustachian tube dysfunction. Patulous Eustachian tube dysfunction refers to when the tube always stays open.

Conversely, with obstructive Eustachian tube dysfunction and baro-challenge-induced Eustachian tube dysfunction, the tubes do not open as they should. Fluid builds up with obstructive dysfunction, and baro-challenge-induced dysfunction occurs with altitude changes.

Your ENT will determine the cause of your symptoms. Allergies, GERD, the common cold and the flu may cause inflammation that can result in Eustachian tube dysfunction. Conditions like cleft palate can also increase the likelihood of Eustachian tube dysfunction.

Sometimes, Eustachian tube dysfunction goes away on its own, but treatment may be necessary if it persists for more than several weeks. Though it is uncommon, untreated Eustachian tube dysfunction can lead to permanent hearing loss and damage to the middle ear and eardrum.

Mild Eustachian tube disorder can sometimes be resolved with home remedies like chewing gum, swallowing, yawning or saline spray. You may also benefit from the Valsalva maneuver, which involves exhaling while closing your mouth and pinching your nostrils.

Depending on the cause of your Eustachian tube dysfunction, your doctor may recommend allergy medication, antibiotics or corticosteroids.

If you are experiencing chronic Eustachian tube dysfunction, you may need surgery to correct ventilation issues in your middle ears. Your doctor will explain any potential procedures in detail so you can feel confident about the process.

Surgical options to resolve Eustachian tube dysfunction include:

• Myringotomy: Your surgeon makes a small cut in your eardrum to drain fluid.
• Ear Tubes: Often placed into the incision made during a myringotomy, these tubes help ensure your ears stay ventilated.
• Eustachian Tube Balloon Dilation: During this procedure, your surgeon expands your tubes with a small balloon to help with ventilation.
